As we head through Kluane National Park to picturesque Whitehorse, our journey continues north on gorgeous scenic byways, the Haines Highway and the Alaska Highway. We will explore First Nations culture and heritage on our travels south to the gold-rush boomtown of Skagway, where scenic train rides, float trips down the Taiya River, and history await us. We finish where we began, in the beautiful coastal capital of Juneau, having explored the best of Southeast Alaska and the Yukon.
JUNEAU
Downtown Juneau: Juneau is nestled in a beautifully unique landscape of temperate rainforest, glaciers, glacially-carved valleys, ocean, and islands. Downtown Juneau perfectly combines a modern city, native culture, and Last Frontier coastal town. Enjoy shopping, museums, art, and exquisite Alaskan cuisine along the waterfront. With ocean views, looming snow-capped peaks, and glaciers surrounding the city, you won’t have to look far for the perfect picture!
Mendenhall Glacier: The Mendenhall Glacier, one of the most beautiful and easily accessible glaciers on the continent, sits just 13 miles away from downtown Juneau, making it one of the most popular and praised destinations in the city. The beautiful blue glacier is nearly a half-mile vast and boasts ice almost 1,800 feet deep; as part of the 1,500 square mile Juneau Icefield, the Mendenhall is in good company.
Whale Watching on the Fjordlands: When we board the Fjordlands ferry for a scenic transfer to and from Juneau, we’ll get much more than just a boat ride. Whale watching comes hand-in-hand with this ferry trip, as our seasoned captains navigate the waters around Juneau to find the most likely places to encounter whales! The Fjordlands ferry is a great way to see Alaska’s Inside Passage. Some of the wildlife you may encounter besides whales include a stellar sea lion rookery, harbor seals, nesting bald eagles, and porpoises. While sailing, you will be able to enjoy the majestic mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers. You will also get the chance to snap some pictures of Eldred Rock Lighthouse, the oldest original lighthouse in Alaska! A continental breakfast will be served on board with muffins, apples, coffee, and tea.
Eldred Rock Lighthouse: Eldred Rock Lighthouse is the oldest original lighthouse in all of Alaska! Built-in 1905, historians believe that its larger-than-standard size helped keep it maintained and in service for much longer than many other lighthouses along Alaska’s rugged coast. It is the only station never to be rebuilt. Constructed to alleviate the multitude of shipwrecks along the route during the Gold Rush, the lighthouse is most famous for being the site of the wreck of the Clara Nevada, said to be carrying nearly 800 pounds of gold.
HAINES
Downtown Haines: Haines is a picture-perfect fishing town of about 2,500 people. It offers incredible wildlife viewing and outstanding outdoor adventures. Haines hosts a rich cultural history with Fort Seward, one of the first military forts in Alaska, and is only 20 miles from the native Tlingit village of Klukwan. Take a stroll down the main street, or head to Fort Seward's waterfront for smoked salmon, Tlingit art, or a beachside hike.
Kroschel Wildlife Center: We will visit the famed Kroschel Wildlife Center as part of our natural history and wildlife viewing tour. We will be welcomed by Steve Kroschel and his staff, who will take us through a hands-on visit with face-to-face encounters with the wildlife and grant us intimate close-up photo opportunities with these rescued animals. Walking through the wildlife center, we will discover orphaned wolves, Arctic fox, lynx, porcupine, pine marten, mink, reindeer, wolverines, and more.
Native Village of Klukwan: Klukwan is one of the largest communities of Tlingits (an Alaska native people group) still in existence, located twenty-two miles north of Haines. Situated at the confluence of three glacially fed rivers, this historic village has seen many generations. For hundreds of years, the Tlingits have lived off the bounty of this remarkable place. Still today, you will see them fishing and smoking their catch at the river’s edge. We will have the opportunity to learn and experience the fascinating cultural history of the Tlingit people. Enjoy a native cultural performance and orientation, including a Tlingit long house, a visit to the Adze shed to see totem and canoe carving, and to the salmon drying houses. The Heritage Center is a stunningly beautiful location with incredible views.
Float Trip Through Bald Eagle Preserve: At the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, you’ll experience the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world! Your specially-trained guides await to begin your rafting adventure (a gentle float, no whitewater!). You’ll float peacefully down the Chilkat River aboard an 18-foot inflatable raft – the best way to observe the eagles drawn to feed on the plentiful salmon. Bears and wolves are also occasional guests at the feast. Not only rich in wildlife, the preserve is also a place of incredible beauty, with towering mountains, hanging glaciers, and lush forests. After your hour and a half float, you will enjoy a riverside picnic lunch on the banks of the river.
Canoe Trip on Chilkoot Lake: The Chilkoot River Valley offers incredible wildlife viewing. Brown Bears, eagles, mountain goats, and spawning salmon are familiar sights. Our guides are expert naturalists and enjoy sharing their love and knowledge of the Alaskan wilderness. At Chilkoot Lake, you’ll be stepping into a Voyageur canoe, which is stable, comfortable, and quiet, perfect for observing nature’s splendor and the wildlife that abounds around this peaceful lake. You’ll be out on the water for about 1.5 hours exploring the inlets, coves, salmon spawning streams, and numerous waterfalls that spill off the mountains into the lake.
American Bald Eagle Foundation’s Raptor Center: Take a trip to the American Bald Eagle Foundation’s Raptor Center, an interpretive wildlife education center. Here, we will watch a training session with the beautiful, majestic, and powerful bird that serves as America’s symbol – up close and in person! We will also learn more about the other native and local wildlife. We will also be treated to a live presentation with one of the foundation’s resident ambassador raptors.
Chilkat State Park: Chilkat State Park is one of the most beautiful places to explore around Haines. The temperate rainforest growth provides absolute tranquility, making it one of the best places to look for moose. As it’s located right along the coastline of the Lynn Canal, there are ample opportunities to stroll the beach trail and search for bears, whales, seals, sea lions, and diving bald eagles. However, the view of the Rainbow Glacier — a hanging glacier with a large waterfall spilling over the glacial face — is what sets this park on a pedestal. A short drive along the coast brings us to the Chilkat River Delta, which spans more than two miles across. Watch for the eagles, gulls, and other seabirds diving for the echelon run and other fish as this intertidal zone swirls and changes in an instant.
Port Chilkoot Distillery Tasting: No trip to Haines is complete without a stop at the Port Chilkoot Distillery! Renowned for its nationally award-winning spirits and local ambiance, the distillery is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. There, you will learn about the distillery's history, visit the barrel room, and take a private tour of their facility. After the tour, you will sit down for three different tastings of finely crafted spirits. In between drinks, you will taste the locally-inspired, tapas-style food from one of the best restaurants in Haines. Examples may include elk meatballs with local basil pesto, salmon cakes with a delicious remoulade, seasonal bruschetta, or a flourless chocolate torte with Sitka blueberry sea salt. Take a bottle home with you as an unforgettable souvenir!
YUKON TERRITORY
Downtown Whitehorse: Whitehorse, the Yukon Territory’s capital, is considered Canada’s Wilderness City for good reason. With 25,000 people, Whitehorse offers all the amenities of a cosmopolitan city with unspoiled wilderness on its doorstep. Nestled between rolling mountains and the banks of the Yukon River, it provides easy access to trails, lakes, rivers, and magnificent mountain views. Downtown Whitehorse showcases both its Gold Rush history and its native cultural roots. Shop for Robert Service books in the land that inspired his many great tales; sip a latte along the banks of the Yukon River. There’s something for everyone in this beautiful frontier city!
Kathleen Lake: As we head towards Haines Junction, there are fantastic views of glaciers, cascading waterfalls, and wide expanses of alpine tundra. We will stop at sparkling Kathleen Lake for a walk by crystal-clear water surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We may be treated to blooming wildflowers around the lake in mid-late summer, and in fall, the aspen forests fade to a magical golden glow. A boardwalk skirts the shores for easy accessibility right down to the beautiful waters.
Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor’s Center: This Yukon Territory National Park is home to a myriad of extremes, from churning whitewater surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Canada’s highest peak (19,550 foot Mount Logan), the nation’s largest ice field, and the most incredible and most diverse grizzly population in North America. We may be treated to blooming wildflowers around the gorgeous Kathleen Lake in mid-late summer, and in fall, the aspen forests fade to a magical golden glow. Kluane is a wonderland of scenic splendor that travelers from around the globe journey to see each year.
Emerald Lake: We will stop to visit one of the most photographed places in the Yukon — the spectacular turquoise-hued Emerald Lake. Carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago, the lake gains its stunning colors from light reflecting off mineral deposits on the bottom of the shallow lake. The lake changes color as the sun peeks out from the clouds!
Carcross Desert: An anomaly in an alpine world, the Carcross Desert is considered the smallest desert in the world, measuring approximately 1 square mile. Stop by for photo opportunities and a chance to put your feet in this geological anomaly!
Carcross: Carcross, previously known as “Caribou Crossing,” is the self-governed Tagish First Nation’s hometown on the banks of Lake Bennett. Here you will have free time to explore the small local shops located at Carcross Commons (filled with local jewelry, treats, and trinkets) and enjoy a great view of the lake made famous by the Klondike Gold Rush. At Matthew Watson General Store, the Yukon’s oldest operating store, you will find a variety of products, from candy sold out of glass jars to regional First Nations arts and crafts, locally made moccasins, mukluks, and leathers, or the more modern essentials such as fleece jackets, rain ponchos, mosquito nets, and bug repellent. Grab some ice cream or coffee and take a walk along the beautiful sandy beach of Lake Bennett, or explore the wreckage of a gold-rush steamboat!
Yukon Suspension Bridge: One exciting stop will be at the Yukon Suspension Bridge, soaring 65 feet above the whitewater rapids of the Tutshi River. Breathtaking views and a delicious free-range, grass-fed, organic bison chili meal come together in a perfect setting for a lunch break. Keep your eye out for rafts and kayaks paddling down the river!
SKAGWAY
Downtown Skagway: Wander through the streets of one of the most famous gold rush boomtowns in Alaska’s history. As the Gateway to the Klondike, Skagway was the port town that led up the (in)famous Chilkoot Trail up the White Pass and into the goldfields of the Yukon. With historic storefronts, hotels, and only 1,100 residents, you will feel like you have traveled back in time in this gold-rush era town! Shop for local fare and trinkets, check out our local breweries and distillery or take a short hike out to Yakutania Point for a gorgeous view of the Upper Lynn Canal.
White Pass Yukon Route Railway: Embark on a train ride onboard the historic White Pass Yukon Route Railway narrow-gauge train. No visit to Skagway can be complete without taking the White Pass Yukon Route train to the Summit! We will board vintage passenger coaches to retrace the original route to the White Pass Summit along a 40-mile round trip. The panorama of the mountains is breathtaking with glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, tunnels, trestles, and historic sites – much of which can only be seen from the train! This tour is fully narrated and passes by Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, and Dead Horse Gulch. The summit of White Pass has a 2,888-foot elevation!
Scenic Float on the Taiya River: Escape the crowds of Skagway into the wild Tongass National Forest. Enjoy a beautiful 10-mile drive along the rugged coast of the fjord to the starting point of the historic Chilkoot Trail, the ghost town of Dyea, and the gorgeous Taiya River Valley. Your professionally trained boatman will guide your raft down the gentle Taiya River, pointing out wildlife, talking about the local history, and telling stories of the Gold Rush. Don’t forget your camera as snow-capped mountains, hanging glaciers, and wildlife abound! Dyea is a peaceful getaway from bustling Skagway and a perfect opportunity to feel like a part of the great Alaskan outdoors.
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park: The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is home to downtown Skagway, the historic Chilkoot Trail, and more! It is a unique national park that spans two states — Washington (where many gold rushers sailed) and Alaska (the start of the Gold Rush routes). We will explore the multiple historical buildings, visitor’s centers, and cultural displays that the National Park Service has created to commemorate the trails, boomtowns, and stories of the historic Klondike Gold Rush.
